Surgeon General Recommends Girl on the Run Program
Physical Activity: An Untapped Resource to Address Our Nation’s Mental Health Crisis Among Children and Adolescents
The US Surgeon General recommend Girls on the Run as a quality afterschool program to help girls in 3-8 grade. Stating our program intentionally incorporate elements of positive development, leveraging sports as a tool to help young people build resilience, foster positive and supportive relationships, and build social–emotional skills, such as emotional control and self-esteem. Programs can focus on removing barriers by providing free or low-cost programs or equipment and locating programs in easily accessible areas, such as schools, to help increase opportunities for all young people. Children living in rural areas or who do not have the financial do not have the same access to sports or programming as their peers.
